Platteklip Gorge

Platteklip Gorge is the oldest and most historically significant route up Table Mountain. It follows a natural ravine that has been used for centuries as a direct passage to the top. Historically, this route dates back to the early 1500s when António de Saldanha is believed to have led one of the first recorded ascents of Table Mountain in 1503 via this very gorge. Long before formal paths were built, indigenous Khoi people are also thought to have used similar natural routes on the mountain for navigation and resource gathering. Over time, Platteklip Gorge was developed into a more structured hiking trail with stone steps to manage erosion and make the steep climb more accessible. Today, it remains the most straightforward and commonly used path to the summit, offering hikers a direct connection to centuries of Cape Town’s natural and exploration history. The hike is about 3 km to the top and typically takes 2–3 hours. Although non-technical, it’s a continuous uphill climb with little shade, so it can be quite physically demanding. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views over Cape Town, Lion’s Head, and the Atlantic Ocean.
