SAFETY GUIDE: EXPLORING TABLE MOUNTAIN & THE MOTHER CITY

This guide is not intended to discourage or create fear. It has been thoughtfully put together by passionate members of Take Back Our Mountains (TBOM) to help you explore Cape Town and its mountains safely, using local knowledge and experience.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN
Never share your ATM PIN or accept help from strangers at ATMs. Use machines inside malls or shopping centres.

Avoid displaying valuables such as cameras, phones, or jewellery in public.

Avoid walking alone, especially at night. Stick to busy, well-populated areas like Sea Point, Green Point, and the V&A Waterfront.

Keep your bag and cellphone in front of you. Pickpocketing is common in areas like Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, Camps Bay Beach, and the CBD.

When assisting the homeless, consider giving food instead of money, or support registered charities and shelters.

Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle. Always lock doors and windows.

Parking is generally free in Bo-Kaap. In the CBD, use official parking areas or attendants.

If driving, avoid unfamiliar suburbs or townships without a local guide. Be cautious in areas such as Philippi and Browns Farm. Avoid purchasing items through informal online marketplaces where scams are common.

When using ride services like Uber or chauffeur companies, ensure vehicles are properly licensed. Look for three discs on the windscreen:

        A. Vehicle licence
        B.Public operating permit
        C.Charter or e-hailing permit

HIKING SAFETY FOR Table Mountain

Always hike in groups of four or more.

Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Stick to your route unless necessary.

Consider hiking with a qualified guide or reputable hiking group.

Use tracking services like @safetymountaintracking by Hikers Network.

Stick to popular, busy trails such as Platteklip Gorge, Lion’s Head, and Constantia Nek.

Use reliable maps such as Slingsby maps.

Avoid leaving valuables in vehicles or displaying them on trails.

Stay on marked paths—do not wander off designated routes.

If lost, stop and call for help.

Keep your group together at all times, led by a hike leader and a sweeper. Walk at the pace of the slowest person.

Stop and regroup at trail junctions or river crossings.
