Trappieskop Hike

Trappieskop is a lesser-known but rewarding hike above Kalk Bay, offering beautiful views over False Bay and the surrounding mountains. The trail begins from the mountainside paths above Kalk Bay and steadily climbs along a mix of jeep tracks and footpaths before reaching the summit ridge. The hike is roughly 4–5 km return and typically takes 2–3 hours. It’s considered moderate, with a steady incline and some rocky sections, but generally less technical than larger mountain routes. Along the way, hikers enjoy quieter surroundings and expansive coastal scenery. The name “Trappieskop” comes from the Afrikaans word “trappies,” meaning “little steps,” referring to the stepped appearance of the mountain’s slopes. The area forms part of the broader mountain chain historically used by indigenous Khoi communities for movement and grazing. During colonial times, the slopes around Kalk Bay became linked to fishing and small-scale settlement, with informal paths developing as locals moved between the coast and higher ground. Unlike more formal routes on Table Mountain, Trappieskop’s trails evolved naturally through repeated use rather than structured development. Today, the hike remains relatively quiet and less commercialised, valued for its natural beauty, local history, and peaceful alternative to busier Cape Town hiking spots.
