Newlands Forest Hike

Newlands Forest offers a lush, shaded hiking experience on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, making it ideal for those looking for a cooler and more tranquil alternative to exposed mountain routes. The area has a network of trails rather than a single fixed route, ranging from easy forest walks to steeper paths leading up toward Devil’s Peak and the surrounding ridges. Hike distances and times vary, but most routes range from 3–6 km and take 1.5–3 hours depending on the path you choose. The terrain includes dirt tracks, wooden bridges, and gentle streams, with plenty of shade from tall trees. It’s generally rated easy to moderate, making it suitable for families and casual hikers, as well as those wanting a more relaxed outing. Newlands Forest has a rich environmental and cultural history tied to Table Mountain National Park. The area was once heavily influenced by colonial forestry practices, where non-indigenous trees like pines and eucalyptus were planted for timber in the 1800s. Before that, the land formed part of the natural landscape used by indigenous Khoi communities. Over time, as conservation efforts grew, the area was incorporated into protected parkland, and many of the old forestry paths evolved into the walking and hiking trails used today. Remnants of this history can still be seen in the mix of indigenous and non-indigenous vegetation, as well as old pathways and clearings. Today, Newlands Forest is valued for its biodiversity, peaceful atmosphere, and accessibility offering a different side of the Table Mountain experience, rooted in both natural beauty and historical land use.
