Kanonkop Hike Cape Point

Kanonkop is a short but steep hike within Cape Point, leading to one of the best elevated viewpoints over the rugged coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail starts near the upper parking areas in Table Mountain National Park and climbs up a clear path to the summit of Kanonkop hill. The hike is about 1–2 km return and usually takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on pace. It’s considered easy to moderate, with a consistent uphill section but no technical climbing. At the top, you get sweeping views of cliffs, ocean, and sometimes even the meeting point of the Atlantic and False Bay coastline on clear days. The name “Kanonkop” comes from the Afrikaans words meaning “cannon hill.” Historically, this hill was used as a signal point where cannons were fired to warn ships or signal important arrivals in the bay below. This was part of a broader coastal communication system used during colonial times around the Cape Because of its strategic position overlooking the sea routes near the southern tip of Africa, the area around Cape Point has long been important for navigation and maritime safety. Over time, informal footpaths developed as park rangers, signal operators, and visitors moved between viewpoints.
