Elephant’s Eye is a popular and relatively easy hike located in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park, near Tokai. The trail leads up to a large cave opening in the mountain that, from a distance, resembles the shape of an elephant lying down hence the name. The hike is about 5–7 km return depending on the route taken, and usually takes 2–3 hours. It is considered easy to moderate, with a steady incline but no technical sections. The path winds through fynbos-covered slopes, pine forest areas, and open ridges before reaching the cave. From inside or just in front of the cave, you get wide views over False Bay, Muizenberg, and the surrounding mountains. It’s especially popular for sunset hikes because of the glowing coastal views. Elephant’s Eye is part of the Silvermine mountain area, which has long been shaped by both natural erosion and human activity. The cave itself is a natural formation carved into the sandstone over thousands of years. The surrounding land was historically used for forestry and later incorporated into conservation efforts as part of the expansion of Table Mountain National Park. Over time, informal walking paths developed as locals explored the ridge lines and cave systems. The name comes from the visual resemblance of the mountain profile to an elephant’s head when viewed from certain angles across the southern peninsula. Today, it’s a favourite local hike because it’s accessible, not too strenuous, and offers a rewarding viewpoint without needing a long or technical climb.
